Environmental issues represent a wide-ranging subject. The delicate ecosystems of Latin America and Australia are both prone to the impacts of climate change while the drive for economic prosperity requires a delicate balance between growth on the one hand and environmental considerations on the other.

From the perspective of development practice and commonalities between Australia and Latin America, we approach the subject in three ways:
- Through focussing on particular natural resources and the competition for their use. Water is paramount but forest and energy resources are also critical.
- By considering processes by which people can most effectively manage their impacts on the environment, especially locally. These include awareness-raising, training and strengthening local capabilities.
- Through examining the tensions that exist between growth and the environment in, for example, locations where urban expansion is occurring or resource extraction projects are proposed.
