Access to services is one the most important determinants of health, education and quality of life. This means not only the ability of people to achieve physical access to a service but also their ability to use it and pay for it.

The house in which families live is often the place where essential services such as water arrive, while poor quality housing often has a negative impact on development.
Over recent years, governments in Australia and Latin America have sought better ways to enable access to improved housing and services. Evidence of change and knowledge on effective methods remain largely buried within respective bureaucracies. The subject is often overlooked and rarely the focus of policy-orientated research.
Within IDEAL, our interest is in raising the profile of the subject of services and housing. Opportunities exist for sharing insights from the work of many public servants and service providers over extended periods of time.
